Why Web Hosting Speed Matters

Best Web Hosting Australian Websites

It’s only natural for Australians to want to support Australian businesses, web hosting included, but we’ve got to face the facts – Australian web hosting is SLOW and it will kill your business.

We’re living in the future where people have access to information at the blink of an eye, and they’ve gotten accustomed to such speeds. Therefore, websites need to load in less than 2 seconds. Any longer than that and people will just get bored and swipe away, looking for a site that WILL respond with the speeds that they’re used to.

In other words, if your small business is running on slow Australian web hosting, you’re gonna lose customers and thousands of dollars in potential sales!

Site speed also plays a huge factor in search engine optimization. You can optimize the keywords all you want, but if your site is consistently slower than the competition, it will never pop up first in Google searches.

Until Australian web hosts buck up, we’d strongly recommend going with non-Australian brands, especially ones with datacenters in Singapore.

Quick Recommendation :

For those of you too busy to read our entire article, here’s a summary; Australian web hosting fails to impress in terms of speed and value. You’re much better off hosting with SiteGround’s Singapore datacenter, so customers around the entire region will get to enjoy your fast loading site. See how fast SiteGround is.

Web Hosting Australia is not connected enough

You see, even in this age where everything is going wireless, the internet still largely dependant on undersea cables.

Everything you use the internet for (video streaming, gaming, shopping, business, etc) all utilize undersea cables that are able to transmit terabytes of data at the speed of light, and unfortunately, Australia is one of the least connected countries in the world, as evident in Wikipedia’s list of international submarine communications cables.

Submarine Cable Map

Australia Is Least Connected (Map Source)

Australia is connected to only 21 submarine cables but 11 of those are not working (10 decommissioned and 1 under construction ), and the ones that are still in use are old and prone to cuts and damages, which can cause major outages such as this one right here.

How submarine cable outage affects your small business

We mentioned before in Best Host Singapore that Amazon could lose up to 1.6 billion USD per year if their site is slowed by just 1 second. Now imagine that situation but with excruciatingly slow loading times for days on end – they will lose customer confidence as their reliability is compromised, and shoppers will bring their business elsewhere.

This is what it’ll be like with submarine cable outages.

This situation is very real, especially true for online small businesses hosted in Australia that needs round-the-clock uptime. Slow loading speeds will cause customer frustration and you won’t sell as much as you’d like or as much as you potentially can.

This is why we strongly recommend hosting your sites with international web hosts with datacenters in Singapore.

You’ve gotta to remember that online businesses are global businesses and this way, the rest of the world will still have access to your site if the cables are busted, and you’ll still have decent speeds in Ozzieland when everything is up and running.

What your customers won’t tell you

  • First Impressions Matter
Customers will form their opinions of your brand in the first few seconds they load up your site. If your site loads up quickly, they’ll feel happy and continue browsing. If it’s too slow, they’ll feel disgruntled and that feeling will stay with them every time the see your brand.
  • Customers get bored easily
If your site fails to capture the customer’s attention either via slow loading speeds or unattractive content, they’ll move on and won’t bother looking into your webstore again.
  • They are insecure
People are wary of online shopping. Slow sites are viewed as not dependable, their orders might go missing or get mixed up, etc. A faster site helps people perceive your brand or site as professional and dependable, which helps with sales.

How We Test For Web Host Speed

First and foremost, you’ll need to get acquainted with’s unique server speed checker. We created it to check server response times across the globe. You can use it to see how fast your server performs when responding to requests from different countries.

What’s our benchmark?

We benchmark server speeds against Google’s Recommendation of 200 ms. Here’s how we rank the web hosts we tested:

  • Anything below 180 ms is ranked A+
  • 181 ms -210 ms is ranked A
  • 211 ms – 220 ms is ranked B+
  • 221 ms – 240 ms is ranked B
  • 241 ms – 280 ms is ranked C+
  • 281 ms – 360 ms is ranked C
  • 361 ms – 520 ms is ranked D+
  • 521 ms – 840 ms is ranked D
  • 841 ms – 1480 ms is ranked E+
  • Anything above 1480 ms is ranked E

* Note: The scale is not linear.

Ideally, you’ll want your website to rank at least B but the faster your site performs, the better it is for you.

“A versatile and very well rounded host. We even host Bitcatcha with them!”

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – our favourite web host, hands down is SiteGround. Our sites are hosted with them, we are biased towards them, and in our humble opinion, they offer the best shared hosting in terms of speed and value right now.

Our test site is hosted in SiteGround’s Singapore datacenter, so they perform pretty well around the region, with only 95 ms when pinged all the way from Sydney. Worldwide, they did awesome too considering the distance to US East (215 ms) and Sao Paolo (351 ms).

We received a ranking of A+ with a worldwide average of 159.9 ms (comparable to some cloud hosting options out there)!

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
211 ms 215 ms 180 ms 3 ms 351 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany
66 ms 95 ms 70 ms 240 ms 168 ms

Their support team is simply excellent. Throughout our entire time hosting with them, they’ve never failed to answer a question to our satisfaction, no matter how silly it may be. We believe that they may be one of the reasons why SiteGround is one of WordPress’s highly recommended hosts!

When it comes to datacenters, they’ve got 5 state-of-the-art buildings located across 3 regions. Pick one that’s closest to your customers to optimize your site’s speed (in this case, pick Singapore).

With their competitive pricing (only AUD10.00/month), excellent support, outstanding speed, 99.99% uptime guarantee and a whole host of features we can’t live without, it’s no surprise that SiteGround is our number 1 web hosting choice for Australia!

“Web hosting that’s best for beginners.”

We recently got our grubby little mitts on a few Hostinger accounts and we are quite impressed with the level of service we received. Their very efficient and helpful support team will guide you step-by-step to solve any issues you come across, in your native language (currently, they’ve got teams supporting over 20 native languages with plans to expand to more), which will really help beginners with their website woes.

Now we thought that at this price point, maybe their servers aren’t as fast. Turns out, we were wrong. We used our Singaporean Hostinger account through our server speed check to see how well they perform globally and in Australia itself, and the results floored us.

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
194 ms 229 ms 246 ms 5 ms 349 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany
99 ms 191 ms 70 ms 212 ms 163 ms

With a worldwide average of 175.8 ms, Hostinger’s Singaporean data center proved its mettle with this speed test. In Sydney, their servers clocked in with a very respectable 199 ms, showing the world that Hostinger can easily serve Australian customers while providing the surrounding region the speeds that they need. Truly deserving of our A+ ranking.

At a really competitive price of AUD 5.25 /month, the amount of features you’ll receive is crazy. Unlimited SSD storage, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited emails, 99.9% uptime guarantee, all the goodies you’ll find in a premium web host, but at a fraction of the price. To wrap it up nicely, they’ve even thrown in a free domain name with each new account.

Their excellent support combined with their fast server speeds, competitive pricing, and myriad of speed boosting features makes Hostinger one of the best web hosts for those that are new to online businesses.

“A web host brand built for WordPress”

As the new kid on the block, WPWebhost definitely impresses. They are the sister company of Exabytes (a web hosting company with a strong presence in Southeast Asia) and so they’ve inherited many of the traits that made Exabytes great to begin with.

They’ve branded themselves as a Premium Managed WordPress hosting and they’ve got plenty of performance boosting tools befitting a managed WordPress host (ssd storage, NGIX tech, http/2, the works)

Our test site for WPWebhost is located in Colorado US, with the WP Plus Plan (AUD37/ month). With it, we got 60 GB of storage, 30k visits per month and an allowance of 5 domains.

Speedwise, WPWebhost is pretty damn fast with a worldwide average of 141 ms, with pings from Sydney clocking in at a decent 177 ms. Between all our US hosted test sites in this list, WPWebhost actually performed the fastest with pings from Australia!

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
65 ms 43 ms 97 ms 230 ms 119 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany
463 ms 225 ms 159 ms 60 ms 115 ms

So far, WPWebhost seems to be the bee’s knees with their slew of features and speed, but their service is still very new and their support is still untested.

To wrap it up, WPWebhost is great host for Australians when it comes to features and speed. Their dedicated 24/7 support team is based in Penang, Malaysia – but being a very young brand, they’ve still got to prove themselves in terms of support.

“Best for small businesses and personal sites that run on WordPress.”

Just like Inmotion, A2 hosting is one of the few top hosting brands out there that really cares about the planet. They’ve got a serious go-green campaign going on and they’re 100% carbon neutral.

Besides being awesome at saving the planet, they’ve also earned plenty of awards which says something about their remarkable speed and service.

We opted for their Swift plan (AUD 6.95 /month) and got to enjoy plenty of features that helped keep our site speedy, like SSD storage, PHP7 and their exclusive A2 Optimized WordPress app.

They’ve got 3 datacenters spread out in various regions, with the closest one to Australia located in Singapore.

Naturally, we decided to host our test site with their Singapore datacenter, but the results were not quite what we expected.

Pings from Sydney came back at 329 ms, which is a little too slow for our liking. However, they still managed to score a damn good worldwide average of 176 ms with a ranking of A+, due to their blazing fast speeds in the rest of the locales tested.

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
172 ms 212 ms 278 ms 6 ms 316 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany
163 ms 141 ms 67 ms 218 ms 159 ms

A2 might not be the fastest web host in Australia, but they perform exceptionally well around the region. With their unlimited features, A2 is a great web host that is worth considering!

“Premium WordPress hosting powered by Google Cloud platform”

Next on our list of fastest web hosts for Australia is Kinsta Managed WordPress Hosting. The best thing about Kinsta is that their infrastructure is built exclusively using Google’s very own cloud platform! This allows them to leverage on Google’s always improving tech and a whopping 20 data centers, giving Kinsta the potential to be FASTEST web host around, full stop.

With more than 10 years of experience with WordPress, Kinsta has the ability and know how to create the best, snappiest Managed WordPress Hosting solution for the market.

Kinsta is a WordPress host, it means you can only host WordPress with them. They are also in the premium category, all the great support and speed comes with a hefty price; $41.86 a month, for their entry-level plan. Kinsta might be pricey, but if you can afford it, you will have top-notch support in the industry.

“One of the oldest brands around.”

Bluehost is oldest web hosting brand to make it onto this list, and with 15 years (since 2003) of experience under their belt, they know people are looking for – fast and reliable web hosting.

We like that they’ve got CDN built directly into their account. If you need a boost of speed, it’s available at the flick of a button.

At only AUD 9.61 with their Plus plan, we got unmetered storage and bandwidth, with unlimited domains. When it comes to speed, BlueHost’s worldwide average is a little slower compared to most of the brands on this list but if you’re targeting only Australian customers, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Bluehost is still ranked A with a worldwide average of 188 ms, with Pings from Sydney coming in at 183 ms (with the datacenter located in US).

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
23 ms 78 ms 183 ms 193 ms 164 ms

They’re not as fast as the A+ web hosts, but for blogs and small online businesses, BlueHost is perfect.

“Best for website targeting audiences within Australia”

We actually tried our hardest to include Australian web hosting brands into this list, but let’s face the facts – Australian hosting is just not good.

We tested Ventraip and were pretty disappointed with their results (Worldwide average of 249 ms, ranked C+) and NetRegistry didn’t fare much better either, at a worldwide average of 246 ms (also ranked C+).

Crucial however, managed to impress us with their customer friendly service and speed. They’re passionate about helping Australian businesses succeed, and their small but efficient customer service team reflects that.

We used their Shared Hosting plan (AUD 16.58) and were treated to 50 GB of storage, unlimited bandwidth with 10 domains. It may feel a little pricey especially since they’re limiting your storage and domains, but this could work in our favour – limited resources in shared hosting means no single client will get to hog the server, which results in stable servers for everyone.

Their server speeds are pretty decent, but not as good as the rest of the web hosts on this list with a worldwide average result of 192 ms (A).

They’re just okay if you’re targeting international customers, but if you’re going to only have Australian viewers / customers, you’ll be happy to know that pings from Sydney came back at breakneck speeds – 1 ms only.

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
149 ms 204 ms 283 ms 98 ms 320 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany
234 ms 1 ms 114 ms 205 ms 312 ms

One gripe we do have with Crucial is that they’re still currently using PHP5.6. We believe that if they decided to implement PHP7, they’ll see a major speed boost.

We like that Crucial really means it when they say they care – just like A2 and Inmotion, Crucial is actively looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint on the planet. They also regularly contribute to charities and initiatives that are looking to preserve Australia’s natural beauty.

If we’re only targeting Australians, we’d be happy to host with Crucial and their team of experts.

We really wanted more Australian web hosts to make the list, but unfortunately, they just don’t perform well enough in terms of speed or price.

Sure, Australian web hosting brands perform exceptionally well in the home ground, but that’s the only place they excel in; they are just so slow everywhere else! What’s the point of having an online business with slow loading times globally when the entire purpose of bringing businesses to the internet is to potentially get more global customers?

To recap, here is our top 3 web hosting providers for Australia websites:

Personally, we’d go with SiteGround (hosted in Singapore) if we were to target Australian customers. We’d get excellent speeds from the entire region, as opposed to just being fast in Australia.

With their competitive pricing, fantastic features, superfast speeds and the world’s friendliest customer service team, we honestly find it very hard to knock SiteGround off our number 1 spot.

Pop over to SiteGround official website to check out their plans, or check out our in-depth review of SiteGround!

As usual, drop us a message for any questions you may have and we are more than happy to answer it.
