User Guide

Why do you need HEIC to JPEG HEIC files are photos created from Apple devices (although not exclusively). These files are not very well supported outside of the Apple ecosystem, with Microsoft Windows being a classic example, with no support at all. So how can you view them? or send copies of the photo to other people knowing they can view them? You simply convert them to the industry standard JPEG format using a utility like HEIC to JPEG. Where are all the options? This utility is designed to be as simple as possible and manages all the options for you, for example, setting the compression levels, output folder, metadata copying and more. If you’re looking to manually manage those options yourself, there is HEIC to JPEG PRO with more options, and also HEIC to JPG which handles bacth conversions of entire folders and drives; they also convert to PNG and other formats. So which application should I use? We’ve created a suite of HEIC converter to accomodate peoples computer levels and requirements. HEIC to JPEG – is the simplest utility that just gets on with it, no fuss, no questions. Focused on converting HEIC files that you drop onto it (or right clicking a file in Windows Explorer) HEIC to JPEG Pro – has additional options that allow you to change the output folder, file format, copying of Metadata, and compression quality. HEIC to JPG – is more advanced and has the ability to convert entire folders, drives, and disks. I can also replicate the folder structures and ensure the creation dates match the original HEIC files. HEIC Converter – Can do all the above and has more conversion file formats such as TIFF, BMP, and GIF. So how do I use it ? There are two ways to convert an HEIC file. Option 1. Drag and Drop an HEIC file or files onto the utility from Windows Explorer. HEIC to JPEG will get to work right away and you can watch the progress as shown here: The converted HEIC files, now JPEG files, are placed in your pictures folder, is a sub-folder called “HEIC to JPEG Conversions” – if you’re not sure how to navigate to that folder, you can simply click on the “Show Output Folder” link in the utility and it’ll take you straight there. During conversion, you can cancel it at any time by pressing the “Cancel” button. Once conversion is complete, the “Complete” message will stay for about five seconds, then return to the “Drag and Drop HEIC files here” so you can add more files. Option 2 . In Windows Explorer, simply right click on an HEIC file, select “Open With”, aand choose “HEIC to JPEG” Technical Notes HEIC to JPEG does not upload any data to the internet and is privacy assured. It will work on HEIC files even when Windows doesn;t understand them (it has a built-in decoder). It is 64-bit only for performance. It copies the metadata (EXIF) data from HEIC files to JPEG files, this includes data such as Date Taken, Camera information, and more.

Recover Storage and Disk Space

We all have duplicate photos and videos hanging around, some where we’ve copied folders, files, or even complete disks from

USB, Cameras, or Phones. Recovering the space used by these files means you can free up all that disk space or cloud storage.

Remove Identical photos

Duplicates are files that match 100%, even if they’ve been renamed or moved to another drive or disk. Sometimes you might look at two files and think they’re the same, but Duplicate Photo Cleaner can look deep into the file and spot minor differences, to th eimage itself, or the metadata surrounding the image or video.

Remove Identical Videos

Videos are commonly associated with photos, especially from phones such as apple that can save ‘live photos’ or just videos taken throughout your day.

Faster Backups

With fewer files hanging around, your backups will be faster, searches will be easier, the right memory easier to find.

User-Guide

Remove duplicate photos and videos from your computer and recover disk space. Using AI techniques normally reserved for the cloud, Duplicate Photo Cleaner views your photos as you do, making it easier to find duplicates, even across different file formats and sizes. It can also find similar photos that may have been edited, or part of a photo sequence. To make it easier, auto-select, selects the most obvious duplicates for you using a rules based engine, allowing you to review and edit, or just send the duplicates to the Recycle Bin, backup folder, or delete them permanently.

Organize

• Organize your photos and videos into any folder structure. • Lots of pre-made designs for you to choose from. Roadmap. A “Custom Format Builder” is on our roadmap; this would allow you to build your own folder formats using a drag and drop interface. You can click the “Upvote” button to let us know about your opinions on this, or if we should focus our efforts elsewhere. Your opinion not only counts, it guides our development.

De-duplicate

• Remove duplicates caused by imports. • Intelligent ranking engine calculates which photos and videos are originals, and which are the duplicates. Roadmap. An image recognition system is on our roadmap; this would be able to, for example, compare heic files against jpg files to determine if they’re the same photo and, based on your options, remove one of them. Click the “Upvote” button to give us your opinion, suggestions, and anything you think would make de-duplication super-amazing. Your opinion not only counts, it guides our development.

Text Editing

Sounds obvious but as a text editor, you’re not worrying about formatting, file size, hidden data, or cut and paste between applications.

Plain Text

Plain, means plain. For example, Notepad++ is a text editor, but not a plain text editor; like many others it provides syntax highlighting, colour, special formatting, etc. Notepad.net only handles plain text. That doesn’t mean it can’t handle basic plain formatting such as bullet points, Unicode characters, etc.

Tablet, Touch, and Ink

As a Universal Modern app, it supports Tablets, touch, and ink input.

It’s the Future

Windows Notepad is a great product, but it’s fallen behind as far as Windows is concerned. Calculator for example, has been updated to a Universal app, but alas, Notepad is still limping along as a Win32 app. Notepad.net has been built from the ground up to be a Universal App, as well as being a feature match with Notepad, with several parts being upgraded in the process.

Future Proof

We have a roadmap of thousands of ideas/features/use cases and we’re working hard on getting things in as soon as possible. If you have a pressing capability you think should be put to the front of the queue, send us a message at support@duckheadsoftware.com notepad.net

Story

The Story behind Notepad.net

I use Windows notepad every day, it’s my go-to plain text editor, and in October 2018 Microsoft released the Autumn update to Windows 10 along with the first update to Notepad this century. Great, a Universal, Modern version of the app with fluent design hues and new ‘features’, and about time! Sadly it was a minor update, but it got me thinking.. I’ll just pop down to the handy Microsoft Store on my taskbar and download a replacement, surely someone’s done this already? Yes they have, there were 147+ Notepad style applications to go through. Some of which were going down a different route, but quite a lot looking to be Notepad replacements. I went through every one of them. Most are abandoned, some are Win32 apps pushed through the Desktop Bridge to get them in the store, and some are major code editors. I couldn’t find anything that matched or exceeded my beloved Notepad. I mean, how hard could this be? Some History and nostalgia Microsoft’s Notepad is a simple text editor, it was first released as a mouse-based MS-DOS program in 1983, and has been included in all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 1.0 in 1985, unfortunately, like the other apps in the store, it’s all but abandoned; which is a real shame for something I use everyday. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Notepad I love Notepad and throughout this site and Notepad.net, you’ll nods to the original, from the obvious colors used, to the subtle terminology. And so my journey began When I started experimenting with coding Notepad.net, I quickly realised why no-one’s created a great Notepad replacement. Any replacement, at its core, depends on a great text editing experience, one which is seriously lacking in universals apps. It’s actually worse than I thought, there isn’t a good text editing ‘control’ in Windows, period. So what do I mean by a good text editing control? Like most Windows apps, you use building blocks (controls) which you drop in and use, things like buttons and text box’s. Text box’s are where we do text input and editing – cool, just drop one in and put a fancy interface around it and I have my Notepad replacement. Why did you do it Microsoft? I love Microsoft, I worked there for many, many years; I love Windows too, but I also have a Mac and live in the Apple eco-system. But Windows, in my opinion is better than MacOS, easier to develop for, and provides a better user experience (not everyone’s opinion). Why do I say this? Because I want you to know that when I say “I can only assume that Microsoft has gone out of its way to make editing text as hard as possible in Windows”, I’m not a Microsoft hater. Without getting technical, text in Windows is viewed as a single line of characters (a string), so that Notepad document of 200 lines is actually a single line of text with newlines in it. That’s fine for small files and simple editing, but as soon as we hit anything more that a small file, the ability for Windows to display it on screen nose-dives and things start to fail. Notepad, WordPad, Microsoft Word, and most editors can’t cope with large files, or provide simple views such as ‘line numbers’, simply because at Windows core, controls can’t handle it, or the complexity of turning a single line of text into an on-screen multi-line view with line numbers becomes too complex. There had to be a better way. Bing is my friend. I searched, and searched, and searched, learning more and more about what I was actualy looking for and my options: 1. Use the built in Windows controls. Unfortunately this makes life hard, very hard. 2. Use a paid for 3rd party editor control There is only 1 available for Universal apps, and it’s £399. 3. Use a free 3rd party editor control There are two available for Win32, and, none available for Universal apps a. Scintilla, used by Notepad++ b. Avalon, used and developed by ICSharpCode These are syntax code editors and while they do what I wanted (and much more) they’re not fit for purpose, either abandoned or so out of date it’s 4. Build my own Surely this can’t be that hard? but when you factor in every keystroke, mouse, ink, highlighting, scrolling, and word wrapping option I’d have to develop as well, it’s a major undertaking. From an abandoned project rose the phoenix There seemed to be only one option, develop this as a Win32 app using the Avalon control, and then publish to the app store via the Desktop Bridge. Development began, but very quickly (a couple of weeks) I became disillusioned. I’d be losing the native Universal capabilities, a lot of stuff was a hack, Avalon was a pain to work with (it wasn’t designed for what I wanted, and looks abandoned), Scintilla was archaic, and all the Universal stuff I wanted to use was just around the corner, in beta, first release and buggy as a buggy thing. I abandoned the project. My phoenix moment came when I sat back and looked at what I wanted to accomplished, there were barriers yes, but essentially it could be done as a Universal app, with similar limitations to the original Notepad (no large files, etc). It wasn’t going to be my dream app, well, not to start with, but it was a major start, to get that vision of what it could be, and in the future, well, that’s the future and we’ll see if the limitations are lifted, or I have to buy a 3rd control, or write one myself. Today (Jan 27th 2019) I’ve just released the first version. It has every feature of Windows Notepad, and it’s a Univeral app so its future proof. I decided to charge for it, a small fee to cover my costs. At this point I have a roadmap of ‘features’ I want to add, litteraly years of stuff. As I went through the building of the app and my excitement rose at what would be great and could be done, my feature list got longer and longer. I released version one based on a feature match to Windows Notepad. notepad.net
